Why I Built a Supademo Alternative You Pay for Once

Why ShotDemo is a Supademo alternative you pay for once: $12 per demo instead of per creator each month, what it does, and when Supademo fits better.

ShotDemo is an interactive demo platform I build and run, and since October 2026 it has been a Supademo alternative on purpose: the same kind of click-through product demos, paid for once per demo instead of per creator every month. This post is why I made that choice, what ShotDemo does today, what it costs next to Supademo, and when Supademo is still the better pick.

How ShotDemo got here

ShotDemo started at the end of September 2026 as a tool that turned screenshots into product videos. It grew out of the video renderer I had written for OIData's promo videos: give it the screens, and it moved a camera to each one, clicked a pointer, read the words aloud and added music.

A video plays the same way for everyone, though, and when it ends you know nothing about who watched it. An interactive demo lets the viewer click through the product at their own pace, and it tells you where each viewer stopped. So in October 2026 I turned ShotDemo into an interactive demo platform. The video engine stayed: every published demo still exports as a narrated video.

When you build in this category, Supademo is the obvious reference. It is one of the best-known interactive demo tools, and its pricing page says it is "trusted by 200,000+ top operators and 3,000+ paying organizations". ShotDemo set out to do the same job, and to charge differently.

Why pay once per demo

Before ShotDemo took its first payment, I decided it would never be a subscription. My reasoning:

  • A demo is something you make once and keep live. Most small teams have a handful: one on the landing page, one for sales follow-ups, a few in the help center. They update a step when a screen changes; they do not rebuild the demo every week.
  • Seats charge for people, not demos. A team with three people and two demos pays for three seats every month. On ShotDemo the people are free: once a workspace has bought a demo, up to 50 teammates can join as admins, creators or viewers.
  • Nothing renews. You pay for a demo once and it stays live for good, with unlimited views. Nobody has to remember to cancel anything.

It is not the cheapest choice for everyone, and I say so below.

What ShotDemo costs

  • Free to try. One person can build as many demos as they like and keep one of them live, with a small "Made with ShotDemo" badge, along with its views, completion and where viewers dropped off. Its video export is 720p with a preview mark, one a day.
  • $12 once per demo. That demo loses the badge and gets lead forms, password protection, personal links, each viewer's journey, an AI agent for viewers (up to 300 questions a month), clean video exports, the written guide, the steps as pictures and an offline copy. The workspace's first bought demo also lets your team in and lets your demos use your own domain.

What Supademo costs

According to Supademo's pricing page, read on 14 October 2026:

  • Free: one creator, five guided interactive demos.
  • Scale: $38 per creator a month billed yearly, or $50 billed monthly.
  • Business: $199 a month billed yearly ($249 monthly), with one creator included and $50 a month for each extra creator.
  • Growth: $350 a month billed yearly ($450 monthly), with five creators.
  • Enterprise: custom, starting at ten creators.

Credits for its AI demo agents are sold separately. Prices and plans change, so check the page before you decide.

A worked example

Take three people who each make demos, with ten demos live by the end of the year. On Supademo's Scale plan that is three seats at $38 a month billed yearly: $1368 for the year, and the same again the next year. On ShotDemo the same ten demos are bought once each, at $12 each: $120, and the demos stay live in the years after with nothing more to pay.

A team that keeps one or two demos live will see a smaller gap. A team with many people and a few demos will see a larger one. And a team that makes a new demo every day may find a subscription simpler than buying each demo.

What ShotDemo does today

Every item here is in the app today:

  • Three ways to start: record your product with the ShotDemo Chrome extension (each click becomes a step), give it your website's address and it captures the pages, or upload screenshots. Pages captured from a website are kept as HTML, sharp at any size, with words you can edit later.
  • Hotspots and chapters: pointers, callouts and areas that can branch to any step; welcome cards, lead forms, embedded calendars, videos and password chapters between steps.
  • Privacy built in: blur or cover anything, burnt into the picture viewers receive; the AI finds email addresses, phone numbers and keys on your screens.
  • Voice, music and languages: natural voices on every step, a music bed, and translation into 32 languages.
  • Sharing: a link, an embed, a popup from any button, inside your own app with a few lines of script, and links made for one person that greet them by name.
  • Analytics and leads: views, completion, time, where viewers stopped, sources, devices and each viewer's journey, with leads sent to webhooks, Slack, HubSpot forms or Salesforce web-to-lead.
  • More: showcases of several demos on one page, free exploration (viewers click around the screens as in your product), comments, presenter mode, a demo check with one-click fixes, version history, an AI agent that answers viewers' questions, an API and an MCP server, and exports to MP4, GIF, a written guide, SCORM 1.2 and an offline copy.

A demo's analytics page in ShotDemo

A demo's analytics in ShotDemo: views, unique viewers, completion, engagement, time in the demo, button clicks and leads, then each step with how many viewers reached it and how many left there.

Where Supademo is the better choice

Supademo is the better choice if you need single sign-on, which ShotDemo does not have, or ready-made connections to tools such as Marketo and Intercom. A large team that makes many demos every week and already budgets for software per seat may find a subscription simpler to manage than buying demos one by one. And Supademo has thousands of paying organizations behind it, while ShotDemo only became a demo platform in October 2026.

Where ShotDemo fits

ShotDemo suits teams that want a handful of strong demos without a monthly bill, teams with more people than demos, and founders who want a video of their product as well as a click-through: every published demo exports as a narrated video in 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5. It also suits anyone who wants every published version kept, a demo started from nothing but a website address, or an offline copy for a laptop at a trade show.

Moving from Supademo

There is no automatic import. Supademo's help center describes exporting a demo's steps as images: upload those to ShotDemo in order and each becomes a step, then place a hotspot on each, copy your words across and add your chapters again. Keep your Supademo links on your pages until the ShotDemo versions are ready to replace them. ShotDemo's Supademo alternative page has the full side-by-side.

Try it

You can start free, build a demo, publish it and read its analytics before paying anything. If you want to see what a finished one looks like first, I wrote about the interactive product demos I made for my own apps, including how each step was written.
