Beware: How BetterCV Uses Dark Patterns & Shady Billing to Charge You for "PDFAID"
Seeing an unexpected charge from pdfaid.com on your credit card statement? You aren't alone. Here is exactly how BetterCV uses fraudulent cancellation mazes and sister-company billing names to take your money without your clear consent.

I recently needed a quick resume for a job application, so I paid for a subscription to BetterCV. The initial transaction was straightforward, and the email receipt clearly stated BetterCV's name. I downloaded a few templates and then immediately went to cancel my subscription. That is when the trap was sprung.
As a web developer and UI/UX designer, I spot dark patterns regularly. However, this interaction goes beyond aggressive marketing; it is a blatant, fraudulent bait-and-switch. Instead of a simple "Cancel" button, BetterCV forces you through a maze of confusing prompts explicitly designed to trick you. At every step, you are met with two misleading options:
- "Skip this for now" – This deceptively cancels your entire cancellation attempt and keeps you subscribed to BetterCV.
- "Continue" – This moves you to the next screen in the maze.
Because clicking "Skip" resets the whole process, users are intentionally backed into a corner and forced to click "Continue" just to proceed with closing their account.
The Hidden Trap: The "Interview Preparation Guide"
What BetterCV doesn't clearly tell you is that one of those mandatory "Continue" screens is actually a hidden opt-in to purchase a non-refundable "Interview Preparation Guide." In my confusion, just trying to escape the loop and close my account, the system registered that I had "agreed" to buy it.
To make this scam even harder to catch, the charge is delayed. They waited two full days before quietly billing my card for 445.00 INR.
The Corporate Shell Game
Here is where the scam gets truly malicious. When the charge finally hit my Razorpay account, it did not say "BetterCV." It did not say "Interview Preparation Guide."
The charge was listed as PDFAID.

The Phantom Account Decoy
I didn't even have an account with PDFAID. To investigate where my money actually went, I went to pdfaid.com, registered for a new account using the exact same email address, and contacted their support team about the charge.
Their response proved that the service I supposedly paid for did not exist on their end:

The Parent Company Shield
So, PDFAid had absolutely no record of me, yet my card was charged under their name. I went back to BetterCV's support to demand a refund.
Their response finally revealed how the trap works. They admitted the 445.00 INR charge was for the hidden "Interview Preparation Guide" and refused to refund it. When I asked why it was billed under a completely different company name, they blamed the payment provider.

Let’s translate their email: BetterCV and PDFAID operate under the exact same parent company.
It appears PDFAid the platform isn't the one scamming you; rather, BetterCV's parent company is using the PDFAid name as a billing shield. They use a dark pattern to trick you into an add-on purchase, and then they bill you under their sister company's name. When you contact PDFAid, they tell you there is no subscription. When you contact BetterCV, they refuse the refund. It is a calculated runaround designed to make you give up.
This isn't just a sneaky UI trick—it is a coordinated effort to confuse consumers and secure unauthorized charges.
The Bottom Line
I highly advise everyone to stay far away from BetterCV and any associated platforms under their parent company's umbrella. Their billing practices are explicitly designed to deceive. If you have already fallen into this trap and see a charge from PDFAID after using BetterCV, do not accept their excuses. Immediately dispute the fraudulent charge with your bank or credit card provider and report the transaction as a deceptive billing practice.
